High Tech Spot - Minimally Invasive Hip & Knee Replacement Surgery

Enjoyment of life and staying active is important to everyone. But for those who suffer from Osteoarthritis, or wear and tear arthritis in the hip or knee, giving up an active lifestyle often becomes a harsh reality. Osteoarthritis affects over 21 million people in the Unites States, and is a breakdown of the cartilage between bones leading to painful bone on bone friction. Symptoms include, joint pain, aching, stiffness, muscle weakness, limping and loss of motion.

Dr. David Buchalter has advanced training in joint replacement surgery and specializes in disorders of the hips and knees. He has been performing hip and knee replacements for over 13 years, and has done well over 2000 total hip and knee replacement surgeries.

Today, Dr. Buchalter offers patients an alternative to conventional hip and knee replacements with an exciting new surgical approach; the minimally invasive hip replacement, and the minimally invasive knee replacement surgeries. These techniques utilize a 3 inch incision, which is approximately one third the length of a traditional incision, which is typically 8-10 inches long, and make recovering a much easier process.

Dr. Buchalter is one of a handful of surgeons in the area performing the minimally invasive hip replacement, and the only orthopedic surgeon in Palm Beach County performing the minimally invasive knee replacement. While every patient is not a candidate for these procedures, many patients can undergo the hip or knee replacement through this small incision technique.

The hip and knee replacement surgeries involve removing the damaged portion of the hip or knee and replacing it with an artificial implant called a prosthesis. This device is a replacement for the natural joint allowing for frictionless movement.

Because the incision is smaller using the minimally invasive technique, patients have less pain, spend less time in the hospital, have less overall recovery time, less chance of infection, less blood loss and can be active sooner. Patients may be able to return to their daily lives within 4-6 weeks, instead of the 3-4 month recovery period that usually follows traditional surgery.
