South Palm Orthopedics' Physicians Treat Haitian Earthquake Survivors and Send Much Needed Donations and Aid
Delray Beach, FL – For Immediate release – February 1, 2010 - On January 12, 2010 when a devastating magnitude 7 earthquake struck southern Haiti, crumbling buildings, knocking out power lines and trapping thousands of people beneath piles of rubble, the doctors at South Palm Orthopedic sprung into action.
While the American Red Cross mobilized and rescuers literally dug people out of the region’s ruins, surgeons volunteered their service both in Haiti and in South Florida hospitals where severely injured patients were transported for treatment. In the first weeks after the earthquake, hospitals and clinics in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties provided care for more than 500 earthquake victims.
Dr. Buchalter, Dr, Meadows and Dr. Weisz were all part of the team who volunteered to treat these Haitian patients, working during the days that followed the quake repairing crush injuries, severe fractures and multiple lower extremity injuries.
Many of the patients and their families told stories of trapped loved ones and their heroic efforts to dig them out and get them to safety. The surgeons of South Palm Orthopedics were humbled and inspired as they helped these victims recover from their injuries. The immense gratitude these patients felt was touching and the doctors will never forget the experience of being able to help them. Many of the patients had initial care in Haiti and neighboring countries before they came to South Palm Orthopdics for treatment.
Over $1.5 billion dollars was raised in the first month after the earthquake for Haiti relief. The work to recover and rebuild will take years and organizations in Haiti continue to need funding, supplies and volunteers to provide the still much needed aid to the devastated country. South Palm Orthopedics was able to help by donating much needed orthopedic supplies. These included an x-ray processer, fracture boots, casting supplies, braces for all upper extremities, lower knee immobilizers, arm slings and post operative shoes. In addition, each of our doctors has made personal donations to the relief efforts.
Relief efforts continue and aid is still desperately needed. To volunteer or make a donation, visit the American Red Cross website at www.RedCross.org.
