Arthritis Do’s and Don’ts

Arthritis Awareness Month is in May to raise awareness of Arthritis and its symptoms. Arthritis affects more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children and is the leading cause of disability worldwide.1 Several hundred different types of Arthritis exist. 2 Maintaining an active lifestyle and enjoying life with this painful disease requires learning the Dos and Don'ts of living with Arthritis.

The Dos:

Maintain a healthy weight. A person's weight can have a significant impact on the complications of Arthritis and the pain associated with it.

Gentle exercise. In addition to decreasing your pain and stiffness, movement can improve your range of motion, strengthen your muscles, and increase your endurance when you have Arthritis. Choose low-impact activities like swimming, biking, and walking.

Medications. There are many types of drugs available for treating arthritis pain. Staying active can be made more accessible by taking medicines.

Eat a healthy diet. Many foods contain chemicals that reduce inflammation, arthritis pain, and swelling. Enjoy nuts, fish, leafy greens, fruit, and ginger

The Don'ts:

Quit smoking: Toxins in smoke cause stress on connective tissue, leading to more joint problems.

Avoid foods: Certain foods trigger inflammation and can exacerbate arthritis symptoms. Avoid sugar, salt, MSG, and a diet high in red meat.

Limit Alcohol: Alcohol's inflammatory effects can aggravate arthritis symptoms and add to daily pain.

Don't be inactive: The best way to decrease your pain when you're hurting is to move. Easing stiff, achy joints is possible simply by walking outdoors or gently stretching.

Maintaining a quality of life is easier when you understand your diagnosis. As you gain a deeper understanding of your disease, you will be able to manage Arthritis symptoms more effectively. You are not alone in this battle. A few small changes in your lifestyle may result in long-term pain relief.
